Orthodontics services are provided by trained cosmetic dentist or orthodontists, who have completed their two years of post doctoral training after graduation and have earned a specialty certificate on orthodontics. This is necessary because this field requires apt diagnosis and also accurate treatment. The problem can be anything from malocclusions to malalignment of tooth/teeth, jaws or even both.
Dental braces are devices present with the orthodontists by means of which they align and even straighten teeth. It is a useful device to bring the teeth into position and also help correct person’s bite and ability to improve hygiene of mouth. Misaligned teeth can often be a problem for the regular oral hygiene maintenance. Normally, the braces that are used in the industry are cosmetic or structural. Other orthodontic appliances are also used but metal dental braces are most common.
Procedure of Putting Metal Dental Braces
Initially, the cosmetic dentist examines the structure of the jaws and the teeth to determine whether or not braces will be correct and what will be the most suitable option for the patient. X-rays are done, impressions are taken and also molds are prepared. All these records are then analyzed to determine the next course of action.
With the recent advancement in cosmetic dentistry methods, dentists can now prepare models for the subject’s teeth and jaw using software and laser scanning. Three-dimensional model is developed. This is done by means of laser-scanning and also plaster-models. Automated software, based on the simulation of the plaster impression developed by laser scanning, prepare the 3D image. It is possible to reach optical outcome with the procedure.
The treatment procedure of orthodontics or treatment via dental braces prolongs to two and a half years or more. Minimum time required is about 6 months. Surgery is also done but for extreme cases. If the dentists decide to go for braces, then spacers are used, about two weeks before the application of braces, by means of which the back teeth are spread apart. The back teeth are used to place the bands for the braces.
Those teeth, for which readjustment is required, are applied with cement in the surface to bond with the brackets. The cement is hardened by means of special light. Each teeth take about few seconds to band and bond with the bracket. Then the spacers are used so that there would be room for the molar bands to be placed after a few weeks. Molar bands ensure that all brackets position themselves properly.
Between the brackets is an archwire which affixes the teeth together. These archwires are frequently tightened to have the desired result. The archwire is also affixed to elastic. The placement and configuration of the elastic depends on the treatment course.
In Modern orthodontics, besides metal braces, ceramic braces, ‘clearstep’ or invisible braces, damon braces and Inman Aligner are used. Procedures of each of these are different from one another.
