Teeth reshaping (also known as dental contouring) is an instant cosmetic dentistry procedure. It is used to correct various teeth anomalies such as cracked teeth, chipped teeth, crooked teeth and overlapping teeth. This is normally done in a single visit to a dentist. In certain cases, teeth contouring can be used as a substitute for dental braces.
The procedure of teeth reshaping involves the removal of a few millimeters of the teeth and is done to alter the shape, length and position of the teeth. The cosmetic dentist avoids removing large amounts of the enamel to avoid weakening the teeth. A cosmetic dentist sometimes uses computer imaging to visualize how the patient's teeth will look after the procedure is complete. X-rays are taken to show the location and size of the roots to make sure that the spaces between the roots have got enough bone for adequate support. The cosmetic dentist marks the teeth with a special pencil to map the areas that require chipping. A laser or a sanding drill is used to remove the surface enamel in small amounts. After this is complete, the teeth are then polished and smoothed. This procedure can be performed in one or several visits to the cosmetic dentist depending on the condition of the patient’s teeth. An anesthetic is not normally required.
Teeth contouring can be used to correct minor bite problems. Some other cosmetic dentistry procedures that are used in conjunction with teeth reshaping are:
Dental Veneers
Teeth reshaping involves the removal of the surface enamel of the teeth. The cosmetic dentist takes a lot of care to avoid removing large amounts of the enamel because this can weaken the teeth. If the teeth have got other defects such as small cavities, are broken or chipped or have gaps between them, the cosmetic dentist might decide to use dental veneers after the teeth reshaping procedure is complete. This results in an even better result than what can be achieved by sculpting alone. Porcelain veneers are particularly appealing and are preferred by many cosmetic dentists since they have a natural teeth colour and last long. They also do not stain easily. There are other types of veneers that are used such as the composite resin veneers. Application of dental veneers requires the removal of small amounts of the enamel, typically about 0.5mm -1mm.Venners are custom made for the patient and normally take about two weeks to make after the patient first visits the cosmetic dentist.
Dental Bonding
Bonding involves the application of a thin coating that is made of plastic on the front teeth surface. A bonding material is then applied to the plastic and a light shone to it. The high intensity light hardens the plastic. The surface is then polished. Dental bonding last even longer than traditional silver filings and can last for up to eleven years.
