Dentures

Dentures are cosmetic dentistry devices that are made of acrylic resin and are used as teeth replacements. Dentures sometimes incorporate metal or porcelain for structural support. There are two types of dentures that are available namely partial dentures and complete dentures. If dentures are well maintained, they look very much like natural teeth. People with many or all teeth missing can use them. They not only improve a person's smile but also help in chewing of food and speech. Complete dentures are used for patients with all teeth missing while partial dentures are used for patients with some teeth missing.

Before a denture can be fitted, the cosmetic dentist might find it necessary to remove some teeth. In some cases, surgery might also be necessary to help improve the ridges that are used to support the dentures. During the first visit to the cosmetic dentists,an impression of the patient's teeth is made on wax and this is then used to make a custom-fit denture for the patient. During subsequent visits, the cosmetic dentist will then try to refine the shape and colour of the dentures, further by trying them on the patient and seeing how well they fit. Below is a run down of the different types of dentures available today in most cosmetic dentistry clinics in the country.

Complete Denture

Complete dentures are used to replace all the lower and upper teeth. How comfortable a patient will feel while wearing them depends on various factors such as saliva production, tongue, bones and jaw muscles. Patients who have lost all their teeth or have had them pulled out wear these types of dentures. For patients whose teeth have been pulled out,it is necessary to allow healing to take place before dentures can be fitted.

Immediate Dentures

This type of dentures are placed in the patient's mouth all at once after the patient's teeth have been pulled out. After complete healing has taken place, the cosmetic dentist might decide to do some further adjustments to the dentures to make them fit even more perfectly.

Upper Dentures

Upper dentures are designed to replace the upper teeth only. They are easier to adjust to than complete dentures.

Over Dentures

Over dentures are quite similar to complete dentures ,the only difference being that not all the teeth are removed. The remaining teeth are used as support for the dentures. These dentures provide more support during chewing. They cost more than complete dentures and require more work to prepare.

Partial Dentures

This type of dentures are used when only several teeth are missing and are fitted in the gaps left by the missing teeth. Metal anchors are used to attach the dentures to the natural teeth. These dentures serve a useful purpose since they prevent the remaining teeth from drifting out of alignment,a common problem for people with some missing teeth. They also prevent the exposed gum from getting infected.
