Gum Disease
Gum disease or periodontal disease affects the majority of the population at different levels.
Plaque or tartar around the gum can irritate the gum and cause gingivitis (early gum disease). If gum disease is not treated this can lead to pocket formation around the tooth. This will irritate the gums further and can affect the bone structure, leading to more advanced gum disease or periodontal disease. If left untreated you will loose your teeth
Is Gum Disease Painful?
It can be painful, cause bleeding gums, loose teeth and abscess formation. However, the treatment is not painful.
Cause of Gum Disease
Gum disease can be caused by:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Not visiting the dentist or hygienist
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Genetics
- Hormonal changes e.g. pregnancy
Treatment of Gum Disease
Gum disease is usually treated by scaling of the teeth to remove bacteria and plaque. If gum disease is more advanced you may need root planning or cleaning of the roots of the teeth. If this fails you may need gum or periodontal surgery.
Gum disease treatment is very successful as long as you follow strict oral hygiene regime and do not smoke.
Prevention of Gum Disease
Gum disease can be prevented by regular dental checks and cleaning. Home care is equally important to maintain healthy gums.
